We recommend our Pacemaker Pro drink mix for most athletes. It's your all-purpose weapon, whether you mix to 45g/500ml (isotonic) or 90g/500ml (high carb).
Pacemaker Elite is especially recommended if your total carbohydrate intake exceeds 90g per hour . Elite is designed for super high-carb consumption. Elite has a higher fructose content , making it noticeably sweeter than Pacemaker Pro.

Why don't you use cluster dextrin?
Thanks to our in-house lab in Munich, we tested pretty much every carbohydrate ingredient available in Europe during product development — and this is the personal conclusion we came to on Cluster Dextrin:
- Uncertain legal status (EU): In our view, Cluster Dextrin is not approved in the EU as a “novel food”, which means it’s not officially permitted as a main ingredient. In practice, some brands still use it — while others have reportedly been removed from the market by local food authorities.
- Energy delivery: In our testing, we found the slower digestion of Cluster Dextrin compared to maltodextrin to be a drawback. We preferred the faster available energy from maltodextrin — especially for endurance athletes who need to recover quickly when they’re hitting the wall.
- Solubility: Because of its complex, highly branched structure, Cluster Dextrin behaves differently than maltodextrin in water. In our experience, the powder tends to wet only on the outer layer, forming small clumps that may take around 10 minutes to fully dissolve. For racing and aid stations — where things need to be fast and practical — we didn’t find that ideal.
That’s why we chose a specific form of maltodextrin that dissolves extremely quickly, even at 120 g / 500 ml.
- Osmolality / gut comfort: Yes — measured osmolality of Cluster Dextrin versus maltodextrin is definitely lower. But we believe osmolality always has to be evaluated based on the entire mix, and in most formulas the fructose portion is what drives osmolality up the most. In our full formulation, we only saw a moderate improvement in total osmolality.
Pacemaker Pro sits in the isotonic range at 45 g / 500 ml, which we’re very happy with.
